We recently visited Toy's on a late afternoon because we had a $30 groupon and wanted to try out their cakes and chinese bakeries. It was already a terrible experience right from the start, as me and my husband had to wait in the lobby for 5-10 minutes before someone from the staff noticed us, as it seemed like they were too pre-occupied with the two seated customers. When we finally managed to get the attention of one of the cashiers, we had a couple questions we wanted to ask about the product ingredients but she didn't seem at all interested - turned away and walked right back into the kitchen immediately after answering my first question and didn't even let me finish talking. There was a family waiting behind us that gave up and left the place after over 10 minutes of not being taking care of.At the end when we were finalizing our transaction with my groupon, I had a few dollars remaining balance and decided to use my credit card because I did not have cash on me. The cashier asked if I had cash, I apologized and said I didn't, and she gave me an annoyed look. She yelled (in Chinese) to the other employee across the room and said what translates into "Look at these two - they're actually using a credit card on a $3 transaction."The mousse cake itself tasted fine, but I would never visit Toy's again.

Had lunch with family here, and while we ordered a lot of different things, unfortunately nothing really stood out. I've been looking for a place that has really good beef chow fun, and I was hoping this could maybe end the search, but no. I have to keep looking. It was oily and kinda bland. =( The peking duck was dry also, it was like eating overcooked white turkey meat....if you do decide to give the duck a try, I think you may have to order it ahead of time. The rest of the stuff we had wasn't half bad: chicken with salted fish fried rice, eggplant with szechuan garlic sauce (had a little more sauce than I would have expected), some sort of fried tofu, and fried bread with condensed milk on the side. The bread was similar to the bread you'd have if you ordered a baked pork bun, but more dense. Pretty friggin good. Wow, I just noticed that almost everything I just listed was fried.... Came here with the family for the first time last night since we didn't want to fight the bad traffic going to downtown Seattle after the Fresh Beat Band Concert (to head to Chinatown since we actually wanted Honey Court)In general, we've definitely had better as far as food quality. The service was good. The waitstaff were attentive and friendly. We ordered the green onion pancakes, hot and sour soup, orange chicken, and house special combo pan fried noodles...all for about $30The green onion pancakes weren't that tasty, nor the way they made it, it didn't have a crispiness or layers. If we don't make it at home, and had to go to a place to get some, I would say, order it at Bamboo Garden Restaurant (also in Bellevue)...that place makes it pretty good, plus their hot sauce that goes with it is better. The one at Toy's Cafe gave you some sort of hoisin/plum sauce??The orange chicken was decent, but a little tough since I don't think they tenderized the chicken overnight, however the portion size for the price isn't really worth it.The pan fried noodles--it had good flavor, but the noodles that they used wasn't really the egg noodles (it was different), and so it wasn't as crispy. I think the crispy chow mein house special noodles at Honey Court is much better. As for the hot and sour soup, it was good.Overall, we've had better, and when we go to other asian restaurants, we've actually would bring home leftovers for the price we've paid for, but maybe it's Belleuve that has more of a cost and less food quanity. We would give this place another chance if we have no choice, but if we had an option, I think we would choose elsewhere.

This place is SUCH a hole in the wall; a true mom and pop shop in the middle of downtown Bellevue. The prices are very inexpensive--but, like the saying goes "you get what you pay for!" While I received a lot of food I didn't think the quality was there. I got the Almond Chicken (which came with rice and soup). It was basically MSG on a plate, but what do you expect? I mean, there are plenty of restaurants that pile on the MSG but it still tastes good, but why not this one?I can't comment on the conjoining bakery that's in Toy's Cafe, though it looks pretty good?I don't think I'd come back again.

Came in just for some bakery treats. We picked up a gorgeous Chocolate Mousse cake, with dipped strawberries on top (8", $30, easily feeds 8-10 people). Just to round out the total, I picked up two buns as well. The buns are huge, and house-made. The bread was awesome and smooth, and the fillings were really good as well. I got one "lai wong bau" (egg custard bun) and one "dau sa bau" (red bean paste bun). I'm a sucker for Lai Wong, and this did not disappoint. It had a hint of lemon, which I LOVED. (Hubs and daughter hated it...but one hates lemon, and the other only likes lai wong from her favorite dim sum place...so I ignored them. You can, too. ;-)) The red bean paste was really smooth, and just sweet enough. The buns were really reasonably priced, as well (less than $2 each, and easily 6-7" across). We will go back to try the cafe, but I'm happy to have found a fairly close source for fresh HK buns. Yum!ETA: We went back for dinner. Then lunch. Then dinner. Then dinner again. The food is RICH, but fairly priced and oh, so yummy. My husband (grew up in Hong Kong), is enamored with the "jyu paa faahn" (pork chop rice). I don't think he's found it in a restaurant in the 15 years he's been here! Breaded pork chops, over a huge dish of fried rice, all topped with a sweet tomato sauce and a tiny sprinkling of cheese, then broiled. (The sauce tastes exactly like the phad thai at King & I down the street. If you've eaten there, you'll know what I mean.) My kids also LOVE the seaweed salad (tender strips of seaweed, dressed with soy sauce and sesame oil). We had a soup that was amazing - beef tendon and noodles with bok choy, in a five-spice scented beef broth. No MSG, and absolutely craveworthy.Irene is an absolute doll. After four visits in 9 days, we felt like old friends. So much so that "Aunty Irene" comped my kids each a piece of cake after dinner. As with any other restaurant, you will find the quality of your service (and the overall experience) will go way up if you go often, are friendly, and tip well.

Low prices in Bellevue? Goooood. Wide variety of dishes? Goooood. A dash of light food poisoning? Baaaad.Initially ordering take out from Toy's cafe, I received a bland, tasteless, crispy noodle dish, and a box full of confusingly sweet sesame chicken, but no rice. You would think that would have been enough of a hint to not rely on this place for stellar food, but being the optimistic person I am(with $10 to my name), I went back to enjoy a dine in meal with friends. We were seated promptly and after reading a few reviews, I settled on their most popular dish: beef noodle soup. What came out was a bowl full of dark broth, thick noodles, beef, and a few sections of bok choy. The broth was definitely the highlight of the meal with notable hints of five spice to accent the well cooked beef. Unfortunately beyond that, the bok choy and noodles came off considerably bland. The sour soup appetizer that came with a friend's meal ended up leaving more of an impression. If you thought that was where the story ended though, you'd be sadly mistaken. The battle for my intestinal fortitude would begin an hour later at home and last a fort night before coming to an end, leaving me less of a man(literally). Seeing as how there are plenty of patrons that frequent this establishment on a regular basis, I'd chalk my experience up as unique, but that still wouldn't excuse the severe lack of seasoning put in both the take out and dine in dishes I received.Decor: 3/5Service: 3/5Food: 2/5Heads up: If you've read my previous reviews, then you know what I mean when I say you will receive asian-style service.

While I'd rate the food three out of five stars, Toy's Cafe's unethical business practices in charging higher prices than what's listed on their menu is the reason I'm giving them a single star. They overcharged me for my meal, which I realized when they refused to provide me an itemized receipt even after I asked. Instead, they gave me a yellow piece of paper written in Chinese with just the total written in hand at the very bottom.I don't usually double-check the math when a bill is presented to me, but today for lunch I asked for the receipt since someone else had given me cash to pay for the meal. The lady at the cash register had just calculated my bill, and instead of tearing off the receipt she told me it would take a few minutes to give me a receipt. After procrastinating with some other orders, she went in the back and returned with the ticket written all in Chinese with only the total hand-written at the bottom. She then quickly disappeared to the kitchen before I could ask her a single question.Once I got home I then calculated the total based their menu and realized the reason she was so deceptive about the receipt is that she charged me 10% more than the menu price, including tax. Now I realize this sounds petty since it's a fairly small amount (just less than $2), but it's the principle that they are not to be trusted. The bottom-line is that if I cannot trust them to charge me the right amount, how can I trust them with the food they serve me?

Definitely a pretty average place. I had to travel a long way to get here, and that might have raised my expectations for it. But in the end, I wasn't all that impressed, and considering the number of great restaurants in Bellevue, there's probably no reason to come here again. This would be a rather forgettable restaurant if not for the fact that I still can't figure out how its name has any relevance to it.Anyway, after ordering, it was about twenty minutes before any food came to the table. I was sort of forced to sit there in silence and wait those twenty minutes with nothing to do except stare around. It's probably not in the restaurant's favor that I looked at the surrounding tables because at least three of them appeared to be left uncleaned after the customers had already left. It couldn't have been just a fluke either because the staff was generally quite inattentive and absent-minded. It looked like they didn't care about what they were doing.Well, the food did arrive eventually, and it comes in very small portions. Whatever you order from the menu, the amount you're actually getting will probably be meager. I'm not sure why it takes so long in the kitchen for them to cook up such a scant quantity of food. Fortunately, the complaints end there because everything else is fine. The food is good for the most part, and their jasmine tea is well-brewed. It's just upsetting that all that delicious food had to disappear so fast; I was expecting there to be enough at the end to take leftovers home.Another cool thing about this place is that they appear to have a small bakery at the front. I didn't buy anything there, but I'm all for a little variety in restaurants. But aside from that, the only thing Toy's Cafe has going for it is the taste of the food. You can get decent food just about anywhere else, so I'd skip this one.

We were in the area for lunch and the husband was interested in some Chinese. We had not had good Chinese here yet. I think we've found our place. The service was quick. Hot tea was set out and served with the meal. We had the hot and sour soup and the egg drop soup. Both were very good. Before we had finished our soup, our entrees came out. We had really good Mongolian beef. The vegetable plate was alright. I'm not sure if it was the spiciness of the hot and sour soup or the slight cold I had that I could not really taste a lot of flavor in the mixed vegetables.Lastly, the lunch menu had good prices. Really reasonable. This warms our Midwestern cheap-ass hearts.

Let's just jump to things recommended:1) Beef Noodle Soup - You can ask for just the braised beef or 1/2 beef & 1/2 tendons. The pieces are very large and stewed to tenderness. The soup base sometimes could be a bit salty, but I don't mind. Personally I like wide rice noodles, so I always substitute for it.2) Pork & Vegetable Dumplings - Hand-made dough and the filling is tasty with great flavor. Only $6.95 for 10 or you can take a frozen bag togo.3) Cucumbers & Chilled Duck Feet. I just love the flavors and if you are a spicy eater like me, do ask for the extra spicy seasoning.Service - Fast and attentive, but sometimes when they are busy, don't be hesitate to raise your hand to get their attention when you need service.I have always stick to the same food when I come to Toy's Cafe probably just because I know why I'm there for.

If you're looking for legit beef noodle soup in downtown Bellevue, come here... or Din Tai Fung, if you're willing to wait. But no seriously, this place has really good beef noodle soup, even the Szechuan kind. You can ask them to make it more spicy if you prefer that too.Other menu items such as the shrimp lettuce wrap is pretty good too. Whenever I go to Chinese restaurants, I try to avoid ordering from the generic lunch menu even though it's cheaper, this is one of the places where you should take my advice too. Non-special entrees are usually better tasting and less MSG-ish than the orange chicken, broccoli beef, kung pao chicken options. This place can get crowded during peak lunch hours though so try to avoid coming at the 12 o'clock hour by coming earlier around 11:30 or later. That being said, the large parking lot can get filled up quickly too because of the surrounding stores/restaurants. But lucky for me, it's convenient because I can walk from work!
